Conservation Connections Public Afternoon

Invite your friends and family to come to the Hawaiʻi Conservation Conference during the Conservation Connections Public Afternoon!


From 1:00pm to 5:30pm, all sessions, posters, and exhibition will be open to the public.  In addition to our scheduled conference programming, we also invite the public to join a series of special community events, including:

Pacific Eco-Poetry Performance
3:15pm to 4:15pm, Room 316A

Acclaimed local, Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander authors will perform and discuss “eco-poetry,” which refers to poetry about nature, ecology, environmental justice, climate change, animals, and food. Presenters include Brandy Nālani McDougall, Noʻu Revilla, Travis Thompson, Noelani Goodyear-Kaʻōpua, Aiko Yamashiro, Serena Ngaio Simmons, Jessica Carpenter, and Craig Santos Perez.

Forum: Community Watershed Snapshot, Measures of Ahupuaʻa Health 
3:15 to 4:15pm, Room 311 (Pavilion)

The Hawaiʻi Conservation Alliance Watershed Snapshot is a status report on the health of our watersheds for decision makers and communities. The analysis uses geospatial agency data and select information gathered by participating communities to inform development of a suite of communication tools to advance mauka to makai management efforts.

My Hawaiʻi Story Contest Award Ceremony
4:15pm to 5:15pm, Room 316A

Come and join us, and the 25 winners of the 11th annual My Hawai‘i Story Contest, at the awards presentation.  My Hawai‘i is an annual environmental writing contest for middle school students in Grades 6, 7, and 8, from across the state. Student winners will read their poetry and stories that capture their personal reflections on the environment, cultural values, kuleana, stewardship, and place-based writing.

Sustainable Hawaiʻi Initiative Panel with Governor David Ige
3:15pm to 5:15pm, Room 316 B/C

As part of the effort to move Hawaiʻi on a path toward a more sustainable future, Governor Ige has launched an ambitious statewide initiative that identifies five commitments.  This includes a commitment to double local food production by 2020, implement Hawaii’s interagency biosecurity plan by 2027, protect 30% of our priority watersheds by 2030, effectively manage 30% of our nearshore ocean waters by 2030, and achieve 100% renewable energy by 2045.

Join us for the official closing reception of the 2017 Hawaiʻi Conservation Conference! Enjoy pūpū and other treats from our favorite local chefs while celebrating the winners of our 2017 Hawaiʻi Conservation Conference student awards. Pūpū will be served, no-host cash bar.


Chef Mark “Gooch” Noguchi
 Chef & Co-Founder, Pili Group LLC
Mark Noguchi was born and raised in Mānoa Valley and spent his early 20’s dancing with Hālau o Kekuhi in Hilo. It is because of his time with Hālau that he credits his respect for his home and ingredients. Noguchi is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of The Pacific and the Culinary Institute of America. Although he prefers to just be known as a “cook,” Mark’s dedication to empowering his community through food and education has landed him a spot as a leader in Hawaii’s sustainable food movement.

Chef Ed Kenney, Chef & Owner of Town Hospitality Group
Ed Kenney is a successful restaurateur who had no idea he wanted to be a chef. After graduating from the University of Colorado and spending four years in commercial real estate, Kenney spent a year backpacking the globe, immersed in culture and contemplating life and self. It was on a street corner in Hanoi over a steaming bowl of pho that his revelation occurred: “Food is the unifying fabric of humanity, connecting us to the earth and each other.” From that point forward, a new path was forged.


Ehuola Keiki of Roots Cafe, Kokua Kalihi Valley
Ehuola is an interdisciplinary, culturally-based, prevention-focused project working to establish a strong foundation of health within the ʻohana and communal structure. The program is designed to guide and assist Hawaiian families with incorporating ʻaipono and a way of living that honors our kūpuna, our ʻāina, and ourselves, and emphasizes Hawaiian cultural practice as primary preventative healthcare.

Ono Pops
OnoPops envisions a self-sustaining Hawaii, where people value local goods and the people that produce them. We will showcase this in flavor after flavor, in new and exciting ways, bringing awareness of endless sustainable, local possibilities for Hawaiian tastebuds.


Keilana & Evan

Keilana is a rising singer-songwriter that strives to display diversity in her sound and techniques. After starting her musical journey as a self-taught guitarist, she began to post videos on YouTube at the age of 14. Her sultry acoustic covers of popular music gained her a following of over 1,000 people and over 100,000 views. Now, a classically trained vocalist and musician with a Bachelors of Arts in Music from the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa, Keilana has lent her vocal stylings to projects like Disney California Adventure’s “Mickey and the Magical Map” and Disney Aulani’s “Starlit Hui” showcase, where she was its lead female vocalist. Most recently, she was featured at The Blue Note Hawaii, where she showcased her original music for the first time. She is currently continuing her education at Honolulu Community College in the Music Entertainment Learning Experience (MELE) Program, and assists as an choral music educator at Kamehameha Schools – Kapālama.

After picking up his first instrument at the age of six, Evan Khay has been pursuing his passion for music ever since. Before graduating high school, Evan became a multi-instrumentalist, singer and songwriter. Evan’s desire to blend various genres together has given him a unique sound that showcases his ambitions as an artist. Although Evan loves performing at local venues, Evan is most passionate about performing, writing, composing and recording his original music. Evan’s debut album, “Retrograde” is scheduled to be released in August of 2017.
