Teaching And Learning About The Hawaiian Forest

Environmental Education In One Of The World's Greatest Classrooms

Michelle Gorham Jones, DLNR Division of Forestry and Wildlife
Jacqueline Kozak, Hawai‘i Invasive Species Council, Honolulu, HI

Wednesday, August 3, 3:20-5:20 PM, Room 312

Moderator: Natalie McKinney, Kokua Hawaii Foundation

This two-hour session will showcase various environmental education programs and projects in Hawai‘i. Presenters will provide information about successful models, including examples that are culturally-based and integrate agricultural aspects of environmental education, with a special focus on learning experiences that take place in the native forest. Additionally, updates will be given on the revival of the Hawai‘i Environmental Education Alliance (HEEA), the public outreach campaign for the International Year of Forests, and the progress of drafting the Hawai‘i Environmental Literacy Plan.

This session will lead into a public event that is geared towards local teachers. HEEA will set up an “environmental educator resource center” that will offer classroom materials, EE curriculum, lists of guest speakers for classroom visits, information on possible field trip sites, and professional development opportunities. Teachers will also learn more about the Hawaiian forest from experts who can share facts, stories, and images about the birds, insects, snails, and plants that live in the native forest, as well as information about forest ecosystems in Hawai‘i, watersheds, invasive species, cultural perspectives on the forest, climate change, and the food-water-forest and the mauka to makai connections.
