OPENING INSTRUCTIONS

This year we will once again have an interactive opening protocol involving all HCC participants. We encourage you to register early at the 3rd floor of the convention center on Monday, July 17 between 2-6 p.m. or on Tuesday, July 18 between 7:00-7:45 a.m.

Opening Protocol Schedule:

7-7:45 a.m. Registration, 3rd floor

7:45 a.m. Gather at the 3rd floor of the Convention Center

8:00 a.m. Begin entry by group (see details below) *Listen for further directions that will be announced on site through a the speaker system

8:00-8:45 am Opening Protocol

Starting at 7:45 a.m. on July 18, we ask all of you to gather on the 3rd floor of the Convention Center where you will form groups based on island or continent of origin. At 8:00 a.m., representatives from the Hawai‘i Conservation Alliance (HCA) and the Hawai‘i Conservation Alliance Foundation (HCAF) will begin welcoming each group. ***Each group MUST offer an oli kāhea (chant for admission) before entering the presentation hall.***
 
*Optional: We ask that each participant bring an offering of sand* or small pebble from your place of residence – a small pinch will do (small coin-sized or less) – to place in an ipu (gourd container) upon entering the hall.

This kūkulu kumuhana (pooling of thoughts and energies to address common problems) and annual collection of our one hānau (sands of our birth place) is to honor those who cared for these lands before us and our collective efforts to protect ka pae ‘āina o Hawai‘i (the archipelago) now and into the future. The ipu will be present at HCA quarterly and annual meetings to symbolize the breadth and interdependency of our sacred resources and to remind our leadership that decisions they make have impact beyond the meeting room on our lives and our relationships with each other and this ‘āina (land).

The entrance order is:

  1. HCA and HCAF leadership
  2. Groups from outside Hawai‘i (e.g., Aotearoa, Samoa, U.S. mainland, etc.)

*Groups from outside Hawaiʻi have the opportunity to self-identify themselves using whiteboards. These can be filled out at the Help Station, next to the HCA Booth. Please plan on arriving early to form your group and prepare a whiteboard

After all HCC participants have entered the room, HCA and HCAF leadership will present the opening oli and then welcome responses by any of you so moved.

*For anyone concerned about the possible spread of invasive species present in the sand, please be assured that the sand will remain in the ipu at all times and the ipu will remain with HCA for use at HCA meetings and events. As an added precaution, you can microwave or freeze the sand beforehand.
