Celebrate Conservation Week!

In the last week of July, the State of Hawai’i observes Conservation Week in recognition of our need to take care of Hawai’i’s unique natural environment. Conservation Week events aim to increase public awareness of key conservation issues affecting Hawai’i’s lands and seas and unite our leadership in identifying conservation-related priorities of statewide significance. Conservation Week approaches these goals through educational and outreach activities including the annual Hawai’i Conservation Conference and its symposia, forums, and fieldtrips hosted by the Hawai’i Conservation Alliance (HCA). The theme for this year’s Conference is Island Ecosystems: The Year of the Forest.

Get Involved: Host a Conservation Week Event

HCA is encouraging other organizations to get involved and host free public activities during, or leading up to, Conservation Week and posting it on our Conservation Week web calendar. The calendar will be updated frequentlyb and shared with the community and the media. This is a great opportunity for your organization to encourage residents and visitors to explore ways in which they can help preserve our precious natural resources. Past events have included film screenings, nature hikes, and tours of local natural attractions.

2011 Hawai’i Conservation Week Calendar

July 24-30

	Free Family Fishing Day at Ho`omaluhia Botanical Garden 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Enjoy the catch ‘n release fishing program while sharing the tranquil open space at Ho`omaluhia Botanical Garden with the Hawaiian Coot or `alae ke’oke` (fulica alai), an endangered Hawaiian species. Bring rain gear, sun screen, water, and fresh white bread for bait (no live bait). Fishing poles will be available at the visitor center.
	Community Mural Project at Kalihi Waena Elementary School (July 25-30) 1:00 – 7:00 p.m. Come lend a hand to paint the 250 ft. wall along Kalihi Stream! Put your paintbrush to the wall! Please wear your paint clothes and bring a refillable water bottle. Paint and brushes provided! Please RSVP to: kaupa4kalihi@hawaii.rr.com

DOCARE Makai Watch Observation and Compliance Training DOCARE training workshop on the newly standardized Makai Watch Community Observation & Incident Reporting program at Pupukea (Shark’s Cove). The training, which teaches volunteers how to report fishing and other violations in the MLCD, is free, and necessary for anyone who would like to participate in Makai Watch. Kalihi Stream Clean-up and Painting 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. We need your help to mālama the streambank side while artists mālama the wall side. We are looking for 20 or more volunteers to pick up and bag rubbish within and along the banks of Kalihi Stream, eradicate invasive species, transplant native plants, and do some trail work. Gloves, trash bags, snacks and water will be provided. Please wear covered shoes, clothes you don’t mind getting dirty, a refillable water bottle, and a hat.
