2021 Conference Student Scholarship Program

In partnership with Hau‘oli Mau Loa Foundation’s Environmental Leadership Pathways Initiative, the Hawai’i Conservation Alliance and Foundation (the Alliance & Foundation) is proud to announce the 2021 Hawaiʻi Conservation Conference (HCC) Student Scholarship Program. Celebrating its 9th year, this registration incentive aims to provide a one-of-a-kind career development opportunity for students interested in pursuing a career in a conservation-related field. Over the years, the program has grown to include high school students, undergraduate and graduate students across the Hawaiian Islands. This year the Alliance & Foundation is allowing all enrolled students* into the program. Student Scholarship recipients will receive a three day registration to HCC which is inclusive of access to all virtual Conference sessions (during and after), the virtual exhibit hall, and Conference materials at a subsidized rate of $5 via a registration discount code. This Student Scholarship Application will remain open until Thursday July 22nd, 2021 11:59 PM HST.

In addition, Student Scholarship recipients are eligible to apply for the Pūlama Kuamoʻo Mentorship Program. The intention of this program is to provide an opportunity for students from Hawai‘i to meet and network with Hawaiʻi’s established professionals in the conservation research and natural resource management community. For established professionals, it is an opportunity to mentor the next generation of conservationists, managers and educators, along with sharing their journey in this field. Students will benefit from one-on-one interaction with respected professionals in their areas of interest. If you are interested in the Pūlama Kuamoʻo Mentorship Program, you must submit this Student Scholarship Application by Wednesday June 30th, 2021 11:59 PM HST.

*Preference will be given to applicants who meet one of the following criteria listed below

  • A CURRENT Hawai‘i high school student
  • A Hawaiʻi high school graduate who is CURRENTLY enrolled in a post-secondary education institution in Hawaiʻi (undergraduate, graduate, associates, etc. program)
  • A Hawaiʻi high school graduate who is CURRENTLY enrolled in a post-secondary education institution outside of Hawaiʻi (undergraduate, graduate, associates, etc. program)
  • An individual who did not graduate from a Hawaiʻi high school but is CURRENTLY enrolled in a post-secondary education institution in Hawaiʻi (undergraduate, graduate, associates, etc. program)
  • An individual who will graduate from a Hawaiʻi high school in May/June of 2021 and will no longer be enrolled in an education program
  • An individual who is a Hawaiʻi high school graduate and will graduate from a post-secondary education institution in Hawaiʻi in May/June of 2021 and will no longer be enrolled in an education program
  • An individual who is a Hawaiʻi high school graduate and will graduate from a post-secondary education institution outside of Hawaiʻi in May/June 2021 and will no longer be enrolled in an education program
  • An individual who did not graduate from a Hawaiʻi high school but will graduate from a post-secondary education institution in Hawaiʻi in May/June 2021 and will no longer be enrolled in an education program

In order to receive the Student Scholarship and the registration discount code, you must:

1. Submit this application in its entirety. All applicants should be able to demonstrate their commitment to environmental conservation, especially in Hawaiʻi.

2. You MUST send enrollment verification to capacity@hawaiiconservation.org in addition to submitting this application. Acceptable enrollment verification consists of a copy of your class registration or unofficial transcript indicating your name and that you are currently enrolled, graduation date, or diploma with graduation date. If you are unsure if the documentation you have qualifies, please email capacity@hawaiiconservation.org.

However, if you are interested in the Pūlama Kuamoʻo Mentorship Program your application is due by WEDNESDAY JUNE 30th, 2021 11:59 PM HST.

Process

All Student Scholarship applicants will be accepted into the scholarship program, provided the applicant has met the eligibility requirements and submitted necessary documentation. Applicants will be accepted into the Student Scholarship Program on a rolling basis. You will receive notification of whether or not you have been accepted into the program within a week of submitting your application. If you are accepted into the program you will receive the discount registration code in your acceptance email. At the time of registration, you will need to input your registration discount code in order to be charged the subsidized registration rate of $5.

As a Student Scholarship recipient, you must

  • An emerging professional, who graduated from a Hawaiʻi high school and a college/university outside of Hawaiʻi and is no more than three years into his/her career working in Hawaiʻi
  • An emerging professional, who did not graduate from a Hawaiʻi high school but graduated from a Hawaiʻi college/university and is no more than three years into his/her career working in Hawaiʻi

In order to receive the Emerging Professional Scholarship and the registration discount code, you must:

1. Submit this application in its entirety and fulfill one of the eligibility criteria. All applicants should be able to demonstrate their commitment to environmental conservation, especially in Hawaiʻi.

2021 Conference Student Rate (ONLY for students with no connection to Hawaiʻi)

The Hawai’i Conservation Alliance and Foundation (the Alliance & Foundation) aims to provide opportunities for all students to participate in our 2021 Hawaiʻi Conservation Conference (HCC). This year the Alliance & Foundation is providing a discounted registration rate for currently enrolled students outside of Hawaiʻi* (with no connection to Hawaiʻi). Qualifying students will receive a three day registration to HCC which is inclusive of access to all virtual Conference sessions (during and after), the virtual exhibit hall, and Conference materials at a discounted rate of $50 via a registration discount code. This Student Rate (for students with no connection to Hawaiʻi) Application will remain open until Thursday July 22nd, 2021 11:59 PM HST.

*A qualifying applicant will meet one of the following criteria listed below (please note that most qualifying individuals will have no connection to Hawaiʻi)

  • A current high school student attending a high school outside of Hawaiʻi (i.e. continental US, developing or developed country/nation in Oceania, France, China, etc.)
  • A student (who did NOT graduate from a Hawaiʻi high school) currently enrolled in a post-secondary education institution (undergraduate, graduate, associates, etc. program) outside of Hawaiʻi (i.e. continental US, developing or developed country/nation in Oceania, France, China, etc.)
  • An individual who will graduate from a high school outside of Hawaiʻi (i.e. continental US, developing or developed country/nation in Oceania, France, China, etc.) in May/June of 2021 and will no longer be enrolled in an education program
  • An individual (who did NOT graduate from a Hawaiʻi high school) who will graduate from a post-secondary education institution outside of Hawaiʻi (i.e. continental US, developing or developed country/nation in Oceania, France, China, etc.) in May/June 2021 and is no longer currently enrolled in an education program- A developed country/nation in Oceania is inclusive of Australia and New Zealand.
    – A developing Pacific Island Nation is inclusive of America Samoa, Guam, Fiji, and Papua New Guinea.

In order to receive the registration discount code for Students Outside of Hawaiʻi, you must:

1. Submit this application in its entirety.

2. You MUST send enrollment verification to capacity@hawaiiconservation.org in addition to submitting this application. Acceptable enrollment verification would consist of any official documentation from your institution such as class registration/unofficial transcript indicating your name and that you are currently enrolled (semester and year) or diploma with graduation date. If you are unsure if the documentation you have qualifies, please email capacity@hawaiiconservation.org.

2021 Conference Pūlama Kuamoʻo Mentorship Program

Student Scholarship & Emerging Professional Scholarship recipients are eligible to apply for the Pūlama Kuamoʻo Mentorship Program coordinated by the Alliance’s Nāhululeihiwakuipapa Subcommittee. The intention of this program is to provide an opportunity for students & emerging professionals from Hawai‘i to meet and network with Hawaiʻi’s established professionals in the conservation research and natural resource management community. To apply for the Pūlama Kuamoʻo Mentorship Program, you must indicate your interest on your Student Scholarship Application or Emerging Professionals Scholarship Application. Learn more about this mentorship program here.

2021 Conference Nāhululeihiwakuipapa Emerging Professionals Workshop

Held annually at Conference, the Alliance’s Nāhululeihiwakuipapa Subcommittee develops a workshop that provides emerging professionals and students an opportunity to develop technical, networking and leadership skills critical for career, community, and personal success. Workshop topics are selected based on the interests and needs indicated on surveys taken by emerging professionals and students. Our goal is to empower workshop participants to lead from where they are, by providing them the opportunity to put learned skills into practice. Learn more about this annual workshop and view past workshop topics here.

Workshop #51: Conservation Connections: Explore Your Possible Pathways – Nāhululeihiwakuipapa Networking Session

Wednesday July 28th, 2021 10:15 AM – 12:15 PM

Join the HCA Nāhululeihiwakuipapa Subcommittee during this networking session to meet with professionals from across the Hawaiian Islands! This includes fellow students and emerging professionals, as well as established professionals who we all look up to! This is an opportunity for you to make connections and cultivate relationships to enhance your career in conservation. Meet professionals who have similar interests and can share their advice to give you guidance on your career path. No one career path is the same, but that’s why it’s so important to talk story with folks from across the Hawaiian Islands to discover the right path for you.

This is a networking session meant for students, emerging professionals, and established professionals to engage in knowledge sharing and network building. This networking session is only available to registered Conference attendees. Registered Conference attendees can find this session in the Agenda of the Conference platform – click the “Join Now” button to enter the workshop where you will then be taken to the networking space.

This document is created by the Alliance’s Nāhululeihiwakuipapa Subcommittee to provide suggested content that students and emerging professionals should attend during this year’s Conference. It also contains a few tips and advice about how to attend Conference, network and find opportunities. We hope you have a great time at Conference!

Student Presentations submitted to the 2021 Hawaiʻi Conservation Conference will be considered for our Student Awards Program. Awards are given out based on scoring by volunteer judges attending Conference. Students are scored according to creative ability, scientific procedures, thoroughness, competence, and communication. Prizes are awarded to the top student presentations. Only those who indicate on their abstract submission form that they would like to participate in the Student Award Program will be considered.

Check out this document produced by the Hawaiʻi Conservation Alliance for additional support, tips and best strategies for crafting a strong abstract. Students who submit an abstract are eligible for a Student Award. Deadline to submit an abstract through the Oxford Abstract Submission Portal is Friday February 19th, 2021.

2021 Conference Abstract Mentoring Program

Deadline to participate has passed. This program will be offered again for the 2022 Hawaiʻi Conservation Conference

A pilot program to provide student and emerging professionals (Mentees) submitting abstracts to the Conference with receive extra support in honing their abstract writing skills. Abstract Mentors, consisting of our community of conservation mentors, established professionals and leaders, will review the Mentee’s abstract and provide constructive feedback utilizing the Conference Abstract Evaluation Criteria.
