Kūlia i ka Huliau – Transforming our Food Systems

Many of us in conservation fields recognize the importance of and potential complications in significantly increasing our local food production while balancing the needs of our native ecosystems and other sustainability targets such as green energy production.

Please join us for a conversation with Jhana Young, Sustainable Seafood Manager with Conservation International Hawaiʻi and Dr. Noa Lincoln, Researcher of Indigenous Crops and Cropping Systems at the University of Hawaiʻi as they discuss the ways in which we can transform our food systems to meet our conservation goals.

SPEAKER BIOGRAPHY – Jhana Young

Jhana Young was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaiʻi and comes from an artistic family with a passion for fishing, hunting, gardening, and cooking. As a way to support Hawaiʻi’s local communities and sustainable fisheries, she joined the team at Conservation International’s Hawaiʻi (CI Hawaiʻi) in 2014 to help strengthen its responsible seafood initiatives in Hawaiʻi with a mission to hoʻi i ke kai momona (return to an abundant ocean). She currently serves as the Sustainable Seafood Manager with CI Hawaiʻi working alongside fishing communities, seafood businesses, chefs, and restaurants throughout Hawaiʻi. Together with their partners at Chef Hui, they are leading a statewide sustainable seafood initiative to promote, develop, and market the abundant bluestripe snapper (locally known as taʻape) as a way to increase local food security, boost economic benefits and restore nearshore fisheries. Overall, this program aims to develop better relationships between fishing and culinary communities while also advocating for sustainable seafood consumption through a month-long Hawaiʻi Seafood Month campaign in October. Jhana holds a BA in Marketing and Sustainability from University of Portland.

SPEAKER BIOGRAPHY – Dr. Noa Lincoln

Noa Kekuewa Lincoln is a researcher of Indigenous Crops and Cropping Systems, and has had the opportunity to learn and experience from native growers in many areas around the globe.  He works to revive and understand our traditional agricultural systems, such as the kalu’ulu breadfruit belt at his cooperative farm Māla Kalu’ulu. He partners with farmers and farming organizations to increase the cultivation, distribution, and consumption of indigenous crops, such as through the Hawai’i ‘Ulu Producers’ Cooperative. Dr. Lincoln also documents our indigenous crops and their stories, such as in his new book on Hawaiian sugarcanes, “Kõ”.
