Abstract Mentoring Program

The Hawaiʻi Conservation Conference (Conference) Abstract Mentoring Program is an opportunity for students and emerging professionals (Mentees) submitting abstracts to the Conference to receive extra support in honing their abstract writing skills. Abstract Mentors, consisting of our community of conservation mentors, established professionals and leaders, will review the Mentee’s abstract and provide constructive feedback utilizing the Conference Abstract Evaluation Criteria, prior to the official deadline to submit an abstract for Conference on the Oxford Abstract Submission Portal. This is an opportunity for the Alliance to expand its mentorship programming and for the conservation community to show continued support for Hawai’i’s next generation of conservation leaders.

The deadline to participate in this program has passed. This program will be held again for the 2023 Hawaiʻi Conservation Conference. Details will be released when the 2023 HCC Call for Abstracts is released.

Expectations

1. This program is available, on a first come first serve basis, to Students and Emerging Professionals who will be submitting an abstract for Conference under one of the following presentation types: Individual Oral, Part of a Symposium Oral, Speed Talk, or Poster.

2. Abstract Mentors and Mentees will not be matched up according to field of expertise or interest. All abstracts should be a self-contained description of the research/project to be presented that can be understood across different disciplines. It will also stimulate networking opportunities across the conservation community. In the 2022 Abstract Mentor Sign Up Form, please indicate if you would like to mentor multiple Mentees.

3. Interested Mentees will sign up for this program by submitting their abstract on an Abstract Mentoring Worksheet (see buttons above) to the Alliance Next Gen Coordinator, capacity@hawaiiconservation.org.

4. On the same Abstract Mentoring Worksheet, Abstract Mentors are expected to provide their abstract grade and reasoning addressing the Conference Abstract Evaluation Criteria, as well as providing focus, constructive feedback and comments for the Mentee. For example: “Please be clear about your results” or “please make a stronger connection between your work and native biodiversity and/or biocultural conservation in Hawaiʻi.” Abstract Mentors are NOT to provide direct text edits to the Mentee’s abstract.

5. Mentee’s are promised one (1) review from an Abstract Mentor. Communication or reviews beyond that is solely at the discretion of the Abstract Mentor and Mentee. The Abstract Mentor may offer a second review, but it is the responsibility of the Mentor and Mentee to establish clear deadlines to avoid missing the official deadline to submit finalized abstracts on Oxford Abstract Submission Portal.
