Carbon Offset Project
Conference attendees have the opportunity to help offset the carbon footprint of the 2023 Hawaiʻi Conservation Conference by contributing a carbon offset towards a climate friendly project selected by the Hawaiʻi Conservation Alliance & Foundation. The selected project is:
The Leeward Haleakalā Watershed Restoration Partnership
LHWRP is strategically restoring over 45,000 acres of contiguous watershed forest including an exciting project at Kahikinui, Maui. Restoration is based on best management practices developed with multiple partners that have proven successful. This project will continue planting of a critical area on Department of Hawaiian Home Lands consisting of 8 ahupuaʻa, considered critical habitat for 17 species, and home to more than 30 rare native species. Over 5,000 native seedlings were planted in the project’s first season, and this project will continue to expand contiguous native habitat and increase resilience against threats including fire, disease, and climate change. LHWRP’s efforts summarily contribute to Maui’s freshwater security, economic diversity, and cultural and ecological richness. The area is adjacent to a Hawaiian community re-establishing an off-grid, sustainable lifestyle founded on creating a system for locally managed and sourced natural resources. This restoration effort is coupled with a developing education program that integrates modern and traditional resource management practices through which knowledge is transferred between professional conservation entities to local communities, and where visitors can assist with restoration, learn about cultural practices, and expand their knowledge of native species and local conservation issues via hands-on experiences. $5,000 provides 1,000 seedlings for outplanting.
