Student & Emerging Professional Opportunities
Is this your first time attending the Hawaiʻi Conservation Conference? Overwhelmed with the amount of presentations taking place on the Conference Schedule? Check out the HCC2020 Next Gen Journey!! This document was created by the Hawaiʻi Conservation Alliance’s Nāhululeihiwakuipapa (Next Gen) Subcommittee to provide suggested content that Students and Emerging Professionals should attend during this year’s Conference. It also contains a few tips and advice about how to attend Conference, network and find opportunities. We hope you have a great time at Conference!

Scholarship Opportunities
- If you are interested in the Student Scholarship, please learn more and apply at the Student Scholarship page.
- Preference will be given to applicants who meet one of the following criteria listed below
- A current Hawai‘i high school student
- An individual who graduated from a Hawaiʻi high school in May/June of 2020 and is no longer currently enrolled in an education program
- A Hawaiʻi high school graduate who is currently enrolled in a post-secondary education institution in Hawaiʻi (undergraduate, graduate, associates, etc. program)
- An individual who is a Hawaiʻi high school graduate and graduated from a post-secondary education institution in Hawaiʻi in May/June of 2020 and is no longer currently enrolled in an education program
- A Hawaiʻi high school graduate who is currently enrolled in a post-secondary education institution outside of Hawaiʻi (undergraduate, graduate, associates, etc. program)
- An individual who is a Hawaiʻi high school graduate and has graduated from a post-secondary education institution outside of Hawaiʻi in May/June 2020 and is no longer currently enrolled in an education program
- An individual who did not graduate from a Hawaiʻi high school but is currently enrolled in a post-secondary education institution in Hawaiʻi (undergraduate, graduate, associates, etc. program)
- An individual who did not graduate from a Hawaiʻi high school but has graduated from a post-secondary education institution in Hawaiʻi in May/June 2020 and is no longer currently enrolled in an education program
- A current student from a developing Pacific Island Nation. This is inclusive of America Samoa, Guam, Fiji, and Papua New Guinea. If you are unsure whether or not you qualify as a student from a developing Pacific Island Nation please contact capacity@hawaiiconservation.org
- Preference will be given to applicants who meet one of the following criteria listed below
- If you are interested in the Emerging Professionals Scholarship, please learn more and apply at the Emerging Professionals Scholarship page.
- Preference will be given to applicants who meet one of the following criteria listed below
- An emerging professional, who graduated from a Hawaiʻi high school and a Hawaiʻi college/university and is no more than three years into his/her career working in Hawaiʻi
- An emerging professional, who graduated from a Hawaiʻi high school and a non-Hawaiʻi college/university and is no more than three years into his/her career working in Hawaiʻi
- An emerging professional, who did not graduate from a Hawaiʻi high school but graduated from a Hawaiʻi college/university and is no more than three years into his/her career working in Hawaiʻi
- An emerging professional, from a developing Pacific Island Nation who is no more than three years into his/her career working in developing Pacific Island Nations. Pacific Island Nations are inclusive of America Samoa, Guam, Fiji, and Papua New Guinea. If you are unsure whether or not you qualify as an emerging professional from a developing Pacific Island Nation please contact capacity@hawaiiconservation.org
- Preference will be given to applicants who meet one of the following criteria listed below
- If you are interested in the Students Outside of Hawaiʻi discounted registration rate, please learn more and apply at the Students Outside of Hawaiʻi page.
- Preference will be given to applicants who meet one of the following criteria listed below
- A current high school student attending a high school outside of Hawaiʻi (i.e. continental US or developed country/nation in Oceania)
- An individual who graduated from a high school outside of Hawaiʻi (i.e. continental US or developed country/nation in Oceania) in May/June of 2020 and is no longer currently enrolled in an education program
- A student currently enrolled in a post-secondary education institution (undergraduate, graduate, associates, etc. program) outside of Hawaiʻi (i.e. the Continental US or developed country/nation in Oceania)
- An individual who graduated from a post-secondary education institution outside of Hawaiʻi (i.e. continental US or developed country/nation in Oceania) in May/June 2020 and is no longer currently enrolled in an education program
- Preference will be given to applicants who meet one of the following criteria listed below

Pūlama Kuamoʻo Mentorship Program
Student Scholarship & Emerging Professional Scholarship recipients are eligible to apply for the Pūlama Kuamoʻo Mentorship Program. The intention of this program is to provide an opportunity for students from Hawai‘i to meet and network with Hawaiʻi’s established professionals in the conservation research and natural resource management community. For established professionals, it is an opportunity to mentor the next generation of conservationists, managers and educators, along with sharing their journey in this field. Students will benefit from one-on-one interaction with respected professionals in their areas of interest. If you are interested in the Pūlama Kuamoʻo Mentorship Program, you must submit your Student Scholarship Application or Emerging Professionals Scholarship Application by August 11th, 2020 11:59 PM HST. Nāhululeihiwakuipapa Emerging Professionals Workshop
Wednesday September 2nd, 2020 at 9:00 AM
Held annually at the Hawaiʻi Conservation Conference, Nāhululeihiwakuipapa develops a workshop that provides emerging professionals and students an opportunity to develop technical, networking and leadership skills critical for career, community, and personal success. Workshop topics are selected based on the interests and needs indicated on surveys taken by emerging professionals and students. Our goal is to empower workshop participants to lead from where they are, by providing them the opportunity to put learned skills into practice. Learn more.

Student Awards
Each year at the Hawaiʻi Conservation Conference, prizes are awarded for the top student presentations in the following categories:
- Outstanding Graduate Student Oral Presentation
- Honorable Mention Graduate Student Oral Presentation
- Outstanding Graduate Student Speed Talk Presentation
- Honorable Mention Graduate Student Speed Talk Presentation
- Outstanding Undergraduate Student Oral Presentation
- Honorable Mention Undergraduate Student Oral Presentation
- Outstanding Undergraduate Student Speed Talk Presentation
- Honorable Mention Undergraduate Student Speed Talk Presentation
Awards are based on scoring by volunteer judges attending the conference. Students are scored according to creative ability, scientific procedures, thoroughness, competence, and communication.
To be considered for a Student Award, indicate that you are a student when submitting your abstract. In order to be considered, the student presenter must be the principal author of the work being presented and must be enrolled in an academic degree program through the Spring semester/quarter of 2020 (recent graduates are eligible). Undergraduate (high school, Associate’s, Bachelor’s) and Graduate students are welcome to be considered for Student Awards.
